Sustainability
The Edmonton Convention Centre has a strong commitment to sustainability, reflected in its numerous certifications including Green Key level five, ASTM International Certification for Environmentally Sustainable Meetings, Climate Smart business, BOMA Best, and Road to Zero Waste recognition. The venue launched its Responsible Events Program in 2019, incentivizing clients to eliminate single-use plastics, donate to food banks, and offset carbon emissions. Key initiatives include a comprehensive waste management program with a goal of 90% waste diversion by 2025 (achieved 66% in 2024), an urban beehive, Monarch butterfly preserve, Indigenous Medicine Wheel garden, and an indoor atrium with hundreds of plants. The centre has a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan aiming for a 50% reduction by 2035 (achieved 45.19% reduction since 2018). It features Canada's largest building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) system on its atrium roof, generating approximately 200 MWh of electricity annually and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 150,000 kg. The culinary team prioritizes local sourcing, with 45% of purchases from producers within 100 miles in 2019, and offers a plant-based menu. They also participate in the 'Second Helping Program' to donate surplus food to the Edmonton Food Bank.
