The Westin Nova Scotian

The Westin Nova Scotian is an environmentally friendly hotel with a 4-leaf rating from The Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program. Initiatives include being smoke-free in all guest rooms and common areas, using a Toyota Highlander Hybrid for its downtown shuttle, and converting heating and cooking methods from oil to natural gas. The hotel utilizes water coolers and glasses in meeting rooms instead of plastic bottles, employs energy-efficient LED lighting property-wide, and has a food composting program that also donates to local food banks. All laundry chemicals are phosphate-free. The property recycles water from air-cooled refrigerators for cooling, uses aerators and low-flow toilets, and has a 'Green Program' for towel and linen changes upon request. There is a strong emphasis on recycling various materials, paperless registration, and the use of local food products. Recent renovations included CSA-approved low E and argon gas windows, an energy-efficient steam plant, new air handling units, heat recovery chillers, and occupancy sensors in guest rooms. The hotel also installed AquaRecycle for laundry water recycling and has policies against single-use plastic straws and stirrers, along with comprehensive food waste and recycling policies.
