About this congress
The World Parks Congress, officially known for its upcoming edition as the IUCN World Protected and Conserved Areas Congress 2027, is the world's premier global forum for setting the agenda for protected areas. It takes place approximately once every ten years and has significantly influenced national governments in creating new protected areas and directing resources towards biodiversity conservation since its inception in 1962. The 2027 Congress in Panama will be the seventh in the series and will focus on three transformative themes: Global Change and Biodiversity, Scaling Effective Conservation, and Conservation and People. It aims to develop actionable frameworks to address global challenges, secure conservation gains, and inform the agenda for the ensuing decades, coinciding with the final years of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
